Kevin White is a highly regarded drummer based in Charlotte, NC. He began playing drums as a child and received his first full drum kit from his parents at the age of 12. He has been teaching private drum/percussion lessons and performing for over 25 years.
After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s School of Music, he began teaching private drum lessons and selling drum equipment & supplies at a local music store. There he honed his skills as a teacher and became familiar with all aspects of the drums. His desire to learn all he could opened many doors allowing him to consult with many influential drummers such as David Garibaldi, Jim Chapin, Dennis Chambers, Akira Jimbo, and Tony Royster Jr. He also studied at the world-famous Drummers Collective in New York City.
A few years after graduating Kevin moved to the Charlotte area to work at a national music school as a full-time educator. This move allowed him the opportunity to create his own teaching curriculum and thus the “Breaking It Down” book series was born. He created the books from how he taught his lessons. Kevin realized there was a need for easier to follow beginner drum instruction books. Most students lacked the coordination to play the exercises provided in most books available to beginners. Kevin has developed a snare drum/drum set combo book series that is designed to “Break Down” the grooves and allow the student to learn in easy steps. He also noticed that many piano students have much more success when learning out of a series of instructional books as opposed to individually created books. The lack of this type of educational material for drum students is why he developed the “Breaking It Down” any age series along with the “Breaking It Down For Kids” series. Having so much success with his teaching style and books the school took notice and asked him to educate other teachers on how to retain students and keep their student rosters full.
The “Breaking It Down” series started as one book and now has grown to over 10 books. These books are sold internationally, from Alaska to Australia and everywhere in between and can be purchased on this website.
Kevin has performed with many local and national groups covering the styles of rock, jazz, blues, and soul. Kevin’s music style includes jazz, funk, reggae, rock, blues and soul. His influences are Vinnie Colaiuta, Bernard Purdie, Jeff Porcaro, and Clyde Stubblefield.
Kevin is also a consulting member of the Salyers Percussion Education Team.
